Te anamata o Te Oko The future of the Portal

Find out what's coming next

The updated Natural Hazards Portal released in June 2026, is a significant step forward from our 2023 platform and claims map. The release adds more information and concepts about natural hazard risk, and provides natural hazard maps alongside settled claims information, starting with a pilot in the Bay of Plenty region. The pilot will help us understand what's useful and working well before we expand natural hazards maps to other parts of the country.

This is the beginning, not the finished product - more exciting and useful functionality is to come.

Our goal is for the Portal to become New Zealand's primary source of natural hazard risk information - useful to individuals, communities, councils, and planners alike. Over time, we plan to add nationwide hazard maps, more detailed property-level information and assessments, and tools that help people understand not just where hazards exist, but what that means for their home and community, and what they can do about it.

We will expand what the Portal offers as new data becomes available and as we learn more about what people need from it. Updates will be signalled on this page over time.

Kia kaha tātou. Let’s stay strong together.
